The Venue
A bit more about Gosfield Hall
History
Our wedding will take place at Gosfield Hall, a beautiful country house tucked away in the peaceful Essex countryside. The hall was first built in 1545 by Sir John Wentworth, a member of Cardinal Wolsey’s household, and has been home to centuries of remarkable stories. Queen Elizabeth I once stayed here with her royal entourage, filling the grand rooms and courtyard with the bustle of court life. Many years later, in the early 1800s, the exiled French King Louis XVIII and his wife made Gosfield Hall their temporary palace, bringing with them more than 350 courtiers and staff as they tried to recreate a slice of France in England.
Over time, each generation has left its mark on the building. The Tudor west front still hints at its 16th-century origins, while the later Georgian owners added elegant touches — including the grand ballroom, sweeping staircase, and the mile-long ornamental lake. The house also has its quieter stories: it was used as a base for troops during the Second World War, stood empty for a time, and was lovingly restored in the decades that followed.
Gosfield Hall Today
Gosfield Hall feels both stately and welcoming — a place where layers of history meet the warmth of new celebrations. We love that our wedding will take place somewhere that has witnessed so many moments of joy and change over the centuries, and we’re excited to add our own small chapter to its long and fascinating story.
